Somewhere along the way of starting and growing your business, you’ll start hearing about branding. That’s the look and feel of your brand, and your small business branding is a big part of creating that visual mood! And to get those photos, you need to do a personal branding photoshoot.
Brand photography is more than just a headshot or pictures of your products. It’s a collection of images that showcase the one thing no other business or nobody else can compete with- YOU!
Personal branding photography is a type of lifestyle photography that tells the story of your brand and business. Small business branding photography captures images that visually communicate your brand style, your personality, and values, and sets you apart from your competitors.
These are photos of you, styled images of your products, behind-the-scenes, your tools or materials, and lifestyle images. You can hire a professional photographer to take your photos for you, or, you can set aside an afternoon to do a DIY shoot and take the photos yourself!

Your website or photos on social media are often the first impressions your future customer or client has of your business. You want quality photos that show who you are- and your brand- so you can create trust and credibility.
The hard truth– your product or service isn’t unique. There are probably countless other people offering the same thing. But a customer or client is going to keep coming back to your business because they connect with something about YOU. Maybe that’s because they are also a working mom- and they know that because you share photos with your kids. Or maybe because they one day dream of having a little homestead- and they know that because you share photos of working out in the garden.
Branding photos are taken with you and your brand in mind, and they illuminate the uniqueness of you and your business. They show the authenticity of you, your values, and your work. This gives your clients and customers the opportunity to feel like they know you- which means loyal customers and open wallets!
That fuzzy selfie may have been okay for that blog back in 2006, but it’s not going to cut it now. If you have poor-quality images representing your online business, people are going to question if your services or products are poor quality, too.
But quality photos from a small business branding photoshoot demonstrate that you take your business seriously and have quality offerings.
Ever come across a totally awful website that looks like it hasn’t been updated in years? Yeah, that’s why you need good branding photos.
We live in a visual world (hello, IG + Pinterest) and if you have outdated photos, it’s going to look like your business isn’t active or legit.
Ideally, you should change up the photos on your website about once a year. This also shows Google that your business is still active and that helps your SEO- that means you’ll show up higher in search results!
To stay relevant on social media, you usually need to take photos quarterly. This allows you to consistently post, appeasing the algorithm gods and getting in front of more eyeballs. It gives you enough content that you’ll always have something to post and you don’t have to worry that someone will notice you’re using those same 5 pics over and over.
Have you ever been walking around a new city and passed an Anthropologie store? You see their window display and smell their candles wafting through the open door. Even without seeing that overhead sign above the door, you immediately know what store it is.
That’s brand recognizability.
Your photos are a way to set yourself apart from your competitors, and when you do a branding photoshoot, your brand is infused in all those images. Repeating certain elements in your photos makes your business unique and recognizable- and that might be through the mood, the colors, or even the setting.
And being recognizable also means you’re always in the forefront of someone’s mind. Recognizable means remembered. Need a boho dress or some trendy new mug? You know where to head. You want to be the small business that people remember when they think of a new candle, or herbal product, or whatever your business offers.
It’s HARD to feel confident about your work when you’re embarrassed about your photos or your website. I know because I’ve been there!
Having a branding photoshoot gives you images that will not only make your business look more professional but will help you feel more confident and professional, too. You are no longer hiding behind those hand-held selfies or fuzzy pictures of your products. You have a beautiful online presence that you are proud of!
When you feel more confident, you can show up more and talk about your business more, which means you’ll grow your business. And this gives you more confidence, so then you show up more, and the cycle goes on and on!
And it all starts with a branding photoshoot!
